We couldn’t believe it was real when we heard the news that Russia invaded Ukraine. Just imagine Russia and Ukraine are like brothers; they share the same history and language. Nobody wants to speak Russian nowadays in Ukraine, and it is understandable, but they all understand it. They mercifully attacked Ukrainian people, cities, and homes on the very first day. They destroyed everything. Imagine you work your whole life for a small house, and somebody comes and crushes it; imagine the lives being taken. Yet, they didn’t surrender; they fought for their freedom; the president didn’t run. He stayed and fought back. It is just amazing how these warriors are dealing with the aggressor.

Is Ukraine winning the war?

I know everybody is focused on who’s winning, but at what cost? On the Ukrainian side, people are also dying, and the problem is that most of them are civilians. Russia is bombing everything; it means that people who just want to live and have a life like you and I are dying. It is heartbreaking to see some cities; Mariupol comes to mind, once a beautiful city, now in ruins. But, at least the Ukrainian army is sending Russians back to the borders.

Does Ukraine want peace?

They want peace but don’t want to give any territories, which is understandable. It is their land, home, and freedom, so submitting to Russia is not an option. The ordinary people don’t want peace; they want to push Russians back to the border. It is clear now that this conflict, even if it ends tomorrow, the hate between Russia and Ukraine will last for another 100 years.

Is there any sympathy for Russia?

Before the invasion, some people thought about joining Russia. But when they saw their “brother” coming with tanks and AKs with the peace offering, everybody understood that it was an occupation. There isn’t anyone whose city/village was destroyed that still believes that it would be better with Russia. Now with all the support from the Western countries, we understand that we want to be with the civilized world.

War crimes in Ukraine

Ukraine has so many war crimes that you can’t even imagine. What happened with the people from Bucha, the massacre of civilians, shows you the cruelty of the Russian army. Another thing that I could add here is that even if it is the army, first and foremost, they are also humans. So, how a human being can do such atrocities to another human being? How can they sleep at night? It is genocide; I cannot even find the words to describe such horrible things.
