“We were actively preparing. Entire brigades were moving across the territory of Ukraine. In the end, we completely changed our configuration, including air defense systems,” said Zaluzhny. Key points from the interview with the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces:
▪️Today, the occupiers are deliberately coming here to kill Ukrainians. If we don’t destroy the enemy now, we will lose.
▪️Such losses would stop any country from further actions. But Russia doesn’t stop. So the conclusion is that the cheapest thing in Russia is human life.
▪️We had the only option that could work. We had to inflict maximum losses on the enemy in the shortest possible time so they would abandon further actions on a more extensive territory of Ukraine. And it worked.
▪️We deliberately withdrew from certain parts to make the enemy “stretch out.” And when their equipment stopped (because there were no refuelers), we struck it.
Emerging from Paternalism: Ukraine’s Path to Self-Reliance and Sovereignty
▪️The Russians made a fundamental mistake – they occupied Snake Island. Our task was to drive them out from there because their air defense assets were covering a significant part of Ukraine’s southern regions and hindering our aviation operation.
▪️Echoes of the Soviet army persist in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. We are fighting against that.
▪️Today’s war is comparable to the First and Second World Wars (regarding the length of the front line and the amount of ammunition used).
▪️”Victory for us means the liberation of all occupied territories. And also having powerful, modern, and combat-ready Armed Forces that will not allow Russia to repeat what is happening.”
The moral factor in war is significant, with all other factors as three to one.

A striking difference exists between how we perceive ourselves and how Western experts and politicians perceive us.
They are skeptics. They don’t see us as independent. Independence is closely related to the moral factor.
No independence means no moral and volitional qualities necessary for Victory.
We know that on the battlefield, we are tough and will defeat anyone.
But they see that we are economically weak. We believe in the Ukrainian sun, which has finally risen, but they see we are 100% dependent on their supplies and financing.
We believe in a historical chance. However, they see 12 million displaced citizens, a devastated economy, an ineffective and corrupt state, and a lack of coherent strategic planning and realistic assessment of factors.
But the real problem is not their skepticism. The real problem is that we doubt. Our biggest fear is that it won’t work out again.
Despite all the sacrifices and heroism, we will win the war but lose the peace.
The central question is:
- Why is a nation so entrenched on the battlefield unable (time and again) to reform its state and economy?
We are fighting three dreadful wars:
- On the battlefield,
- Against our naivety (lack of experience in independent statehood),
- Against our weaknesses and shortcomings (corruption and disbelief).
In the first war, we are winners.
In the other two, we are losers.
Slowly, very slowly, Ukraine is emerging from paternalism – the belief that SOMEONE will solve the problem of our disbelief and weaknesses for us.
The news is that there is no SUCH SOMEONE.
The West will make all decisions based on our results in the second and third wars, the war against our strategic incompetence.
We are aiming to reach the borders of 1991.
How do we measure the degree of readiness to acquire absolute sovereignty (ideological, military, economic)?
The degree of readiness to overcome our weaknesses, disorganization, and disbelief? There are no adults. We are the adults.
No one will do anything for us, give us anything, or marshal a plan unless we pull ourselves out of the swamp of disbelief.
All our strength and all our chances lie within ourselves.
